Why in the News?

India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 commenced on 27 January 2026, bringing together global policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and technology providers to address the challenges and opportunities of the global energy transition. The event, held in Goa, underscored India’s role as a responsible global energy leader and highlighted the country’s commitment to achieving energy security, affordability, sustainability, and inclusive growth.

The conclave, now a premier international platform, aims to translate energy dialogue into actionable outcomes, facilitate innovation implementation, and foster partnerships that accelerate the energy transition.

About India Energy Week

India Energy Week is India’s flagship global energy platform, designed to bring together government leaders, industry executives, investors, and innovators. Its objectives include:

  • Accelerating progress toward a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy future
  • Facilitating policy alignment, technological collaboration, and investment mobilization
  • Providing a neutral international forum for dialogue, networking, and strategic partnerships

India’s Energy Vision

Delivering the keynote address, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, highlighted India’s resilient progress in energy security and climate justice under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that India Energy Week has evolved into a trusted global forum connecting energy producers, consumers, investors, and innovators amid unprecedented global energy volatility.

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri stressed that the global energy transition is about “energy addition” rather than replacement, indicating the importance of continued investment across oil, gas, biofuels, green hydrogen, LNG, and clean cooking fuels. He outlined India’s reforms-driven approach to ensuring availability, affordability, and sustainability, highlighting:

  • Opening of large sedimentary basins for exploration
  • Successive Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) and Discovered Small Fields (DSF) bidding rounds
  • Continued policy reforms to attract global investment
  • Rapid expansion of LPG coverage and clean cooking access
  • Diversification of India’s energy mix to ensure equitable access

Global Perspective: UAE–India Energy Partnership

Hon’ble Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates and Group CEO of ADNOC, addressed the conference, highlighting India’s central role in the global energy landscape. He noted that the global energy system is undergoing rapid transformation driven by emerging markets, digitalization, and the integration of diverse energy systems.

Dr. Al Jaber stressed that the greatest risk to global energy security is underinvestment, calling for balanced investment across all energy forms to ensure reliability, affordability, and sustainability. He also reaffirmed the strength of the UAE–India energy partnership, highlighting ADNOC’s role as a stable supplier of crude, LNG, and LPG, and underscoring the importance of long-term, trust-based collaborations in delivering certainty and shared value in a rapidly evolving energy ecosystem.

Host State Initiatives: Goa’s Sustainable Energy Vision

Welcoming delegates, Dr. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, emphasized the state’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. He highlighted IEW 2026 as a global platform that converts ideas into action and showcased Goa’s vision for long-term renewable energy adoption, aiming for 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050.

Dr. Sawant also stressed the importance of balancing green and blue economies, ensuring environmental sustainability alongside the responsible use of ocean resources. The Chief Minister’s address reinforced the role of state-level leadership in achieving India’s national and global energy objectives.

Key Themes and Takeaways from IEW 2026

Across the inaugural addresses, several key themes emerged:

  1. Energy Security and Affordability: India’s energy strategy emphasizes continuous investment across conventional and clean energy sources to meet growing domestic and global demand while maintaining affordability.
  2. Global Energy Transition: The focus is on “energy addition”, integrating new energy sources with existing infrastructure rather than replacing them outright, ensuring a smooth transition toward low-carbon systems.
  3. Investment Mobilization: Both India and international partners stressed the need for sustained capital flows across the energy value chain, including oil, gas, biofuels, green hydrogen, and renewable technologies.
  4. International Cooperation and Partnerships:  IEW 2026 highlighted India’s role as a global energy hub, leveraging collaborations with key partners such as the UAE to ensure resilient supply chains and foster technological innovation.
  5. Inclusive Energy Access: Emphasis was placed on equitable access to energy, reflecting India’s commitment to sustainable development goals and inclusive growth. Initiatives like expanding LPG coverage and clean cooking access illustrate practical steps toward achieving these objectives.
  6. Innovation and Technology Integration:  Digitalization, technological innovation, and the integration of diverse energy systems were highlighted as critical enablers of the energy transition, positioning India as a testbed for scalable energy solutions.

India’s Position in the Global Energy Landscape

India Energy Week 2026 reinforced India’s strategic role in global energy markets. The country’s growing demand, expanding renewable capacity, and investment-friendly policies position it as a decisive driver of global energy trends. The event showcased India’s approach to:

  • Policy reforms: Creating transparent and predictable frameworks for energy exploration, production, and investment
  • Market liberalization: Encouraging global and domestic investment in both conventional and clean energy sectors
  • Sustainable growth: Balancing energy access with climate goals, emphasizing decarbonization without compromising development

Conclusion

India Energy Week 2026 highlighted India’s visionary and pragmatic approach to the global energy transition. By emphasizing sustained investment, international collaboration, and inclusive growth, the conference positioned India as a responsible global energy leader.
