WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference Begins in Yaounde with Focus on Reforms

  • The 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) of the World Trade Organisation opened on 26 March 2026 in Yaounde, Cameroon. Chaired by Cameroon’s Trade Minister, the ceremonial session was attended by WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and trade ministers from member countries. India was represented by Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal. The opening included celebration of the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies entering into force on 15 September 2025.
  • Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal addressed the Ministerial Conversation on foundational issues, stressing that WTO reforms must be transparent, inclusive, member-driven, and development-centric while upholding non-discrimination, consensus-based decision-making, and equity.
  • On the sidelines, Goyal met Cameroon’s Prime Minister and held bilateral meetings with WTO DG and ministers from Netherlands, France, and Ethiopia. The Commerce Secretary held extensive bilaterals with multiple countries including discussions on ongoing FTA negotiations with Chile, Peru, EU, and New Zealand.
