  • The eighth World Tsunami Awareness Day is being celebrated in the year 2023.
  • A tsunami is a series of huge waves generated by movements under the oceans that are usually associated with earthquakes that occur under or near the seabed.
  • For a tsunami to occur, the intensity of an earthquake must be at least 6.5 on the Richter scale.
  • The World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023 theme is 'Raising awareness of the underlying disaster risk drivers – poverty, inequality and other drivers of vulnerability'.
