The British Museum in London has agreed to lend the revered 16th-century Vrindavani Vastra, a sacred silk textile woven under the guidance of Assamese saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, for public exhibition in Assam in 2027. This marks the first time the iconic textile will return to India, albeit temporarily, on an 18-month loan. Considered the largest surviving devotional textile from Assam, the Vrindavani Vastra is nearly 9.5 meters long and features intricate lampas weaving depicting scenes from Lord Krishna’s life and devotional verses. The textile, traced from Assam to Tibet in the 17th–18th centuries, was acquired by the British Museum in 1904. It remains a symbol of Assam’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
