US President Donald Trump announces end of birthright citizenship

  • On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to abolish the provision of "birthright citizenship" after assuming office.
  • The order ensures that children of foreign passport holders will no longer be considered U.S. citizens, including those residing in the country legally, such as tourists, students, and individuals on work visas.
  • Birthright citizenship in the United States is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that any child born on U.S. soil is a U.S. citizen. The 14th Amendment was passed in 1868 following the end of the Civil War.
