Tamil Nadu has initiated contracts for 6,486 MW of thermal power capacity to be achieved by FY 2029–30, including major ongoing projects under TNGCPL like North Chennai (800 MW), Udangudi (2×660 MW), and Ennore SEZ (2×660 MW). However, other ongoing projects—Ennore Expansion and Uppur STPP—are excluded from this capacity. The Union Power Ministry has urged coal linkage allocation under the SHAKTI 2025 Policy for future bidding and emphasized a further requirement of 7,000 MW thermal capacity by FY 2034–35.
