Supreme Court puts sedition law on hold

  • Supreme Court asked the Centre and states not to register any cases of sedition under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code pending an exercise to review the colonial law.
  • For the first time in 152 years, an important provision of the sedition or sedition law has been banned. 
  • Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court with complaints of its misuse by the central and state governments.
