Supreme Court appoints former CJI UU Lalit as head of committee for appointment of VCs in West Bengal

Former Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed the chairman of the search and selection committee for the appointment of Vice Chancellor in all state-run universities of West Bengal. The order was passed by a division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice KV Viswanathan on 9 July 2024.
A two-judge bench ordered the formation of a six-member search and selection committee after a consensus between the state government and the governor, which would prepare a panel of three names for the post of vice-chancellor of each state-run university within two weeks.
The names recommended by the committee will be sent to the Chief Minister, who may reject or accept them. If there is a disagreement, the name will be placed before the Supreme Court for a final decision.
