Singapore Backs India’s Plan to Join Malacca Strait Patrols

India has secured Singapore’s support to join patrols in the Malacca Strait, a crucial maritime chokepoint handling over 60% of global trade and most of India’s energy imports. The announcement came during Singapore PM Lawrence Wong’s visit to New Delhi in September 2025, where he met PM Narendra Modi. India’s inclusion in the Malacca Straits Patrol (MSP) with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand will strengthen surveillance, counter Chinese naval activity and support India’s Act East and Indo-Pacific strategies, while boosting defense, digital and space cooperation.
