  • 'Post Office Bill 2023' has been passed by Rajya Sabha in December, 2023.
  • It will replace the Indian Post Office Act, 1898.
  • Lok Sabha has already passed this bill.
  • These bills are part of the Centre's plan to repeal all obsolete laws or pre-independence acts.
  • The Post Office Bill will allow Central Government authorities to stop, seize or detain any articles and deliver them to the Customs authority.
  • Now the Director General of Indian Post will have the authority to make rules as well as fix fees for services.
  • The Central Government may, by issue of notification, empower any officer to intercept or intercept goods/parcels being sent by post in the interest of the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, emergency or public safety.
