  • The Parliament passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with Rajya Sabha approving it after a 12-hour-long debate.
  • The bill aims to ensure transparency, protect heritage sites, enhance coordination with local authorities, and include diverse Muslim sects in Waqf governance.
  • A major goal of the bill is to uplift the socio-economic status of poor Muslims, especially women, including widows and divorced women.
  • While the BJP supported the bill as pro-poor and reformative, many opposition parties like Congress, DMK, TMC, AAP, and others criticized it as anti-secular and unconstitutional.
  • The Waqf Council will have 22 members (maximum 4 non-Muslims), and the Waqf Board will have 11 members (maximum 3 non-Muslims), to ensure secular structure with Muslim majority.
  • Parliament also passed the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025, repealing the outdated Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923.
