Pakistan Launches “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” Amid Escalating Tensions with Afghanistan

  • Pakistan launched a major cross-border military offensive, Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, on 26th February 2026, marking a sharp escalation in tensions with Afghanistan. Islamabad initiated the operation following alleged “unprovoked firing” by the Afghan Taliban across multiple sectors of the volatile border. Pakistani airstrikes targeted Taliban positions in Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia, and Nangarhar, reportedly destroying military installations and an ammunition depot.
  • Two Pakistani soldiers were confirmed dead, while Islamabad claimed 133 Taliban operatives were neutralized, though independent verification is pending. Afghan authorities reported civilian casualties, alleging homes and a religious school were hit, while the Taliban claimed Pakistani casualties and capture of posts.
  • The escalation threatens the fragile ceasefire established in October and has disrupted border trade, refugee movement, and security in northwest Pakistan. Analysts warn of broader regional instability, strained diplomatic ties, and heightened mistrust as both sides exchange accusations of cross-border violations and miscalculations.
