NHAI to Develop ‘Bee Corridors’ Along National Highways

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a pioneering initiative to develop pollinator or ‘Bee Corridors’ along National Highways, moving from ornamental plantations to ecologically sustainable green corridors. These corridors, with nectar-rich flowering trees and plants like Neem, Palash, Mahua, Karanj, and Jamun, will provide year-round food and nesting habitats for honeybees and other pollinators.
  • By planting clusters at intervals of 500 metres to 1 km, the project ensures continuous blooming aligned with bee foraging distances. The initiative addresses declining pollinator populations, which are vital for food crops, biodiversity, and ecosystem stability.
  • In 2026–27, NHAI aims to plant around 40 lakh trees, with 60% dedicated to Bee Corridors and at least three dedicated corridors developed by field offices. This effort aligns infrastructure growth with ecological sustainability, enhancing green cover and restoring environmental balance.
