New Dragonfly Species “Lyriothemis keralensis” Discovered in Kerala

Researchers have identified a new dragonfly species, Lyriothemis keralensis, from Kerala’s coastal region, adding to India’s insect biodiversity. The species, known as the Slender Bombardier, was confirmed after a decade of research and published in the International Journal of Odonatology. Initially mistaken for another species, detailed studies revealed clear morphological differences.
The dragonfly has a slim abdomen, distinct tail structure, and seasonal monsoon appearance. It is endemic to Kerala and belongs to the Libellulidae family. The discovery highlights the importance of long-term field research in biodiversity conservation. Such findings strengthen India’s ecological documentation.
