  • India observes the National Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21 every year to spreading awareness about the importance of combating terrorism and promoting unity and peace in the country. 
  • The day serves as a reminder of the tragic consequences of terrorism and the need for constant vigilance against such terrorist acts.
  • The National Anti-Terrorism Day aims to honor the memory of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May 21, 1991, by a terrorist group named Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
  • In 1992, the Government of India decided to observe May 21 as National Anti-Terrorism Day to honor the memory of Rajiv Gandhi.
  • He was the youngest prime minister of India who came into power at 40.
  • According to the 10th edition of the Global Terrorism Index, India ranked among the 25-worst terror-hit countries but also among 56 of the 120 nations surveyed with no respondents selecting war and terror as the biggest threat to their daily safety.
