The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has introduced stricter norms for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), empowering authorities to revoke registration if an OCI cardholder is sentenced to two years or more in prison or is formally charge-sheeted for an offence carrying a maximum punishment of seven years or more. The changes, notified on August 11, are enacted under clause (da) of section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and align with the Citizenship Rules, 2009, which authorise the central government to cancel OCI registrations under specified conditions.
