· A menhir, an upright standing stone, has been found at Basrur in Udupi district.

· "Menhir are straight stones of the megalithic period.

· They are erected above a burial site or near a burial site as a memorial.

About the megalithic period

v Megaliths were constructed either as burial sites or as monumental (non-sepulcheral) monuments.

v Megaliths are spread across the Indian subcontinent, although most of them are found in peninsular India, concentrated in the states of Maharashtra (mainly Vidarbha), Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
