India has reportedly withdrawn from the Ayni Airbase in Tajikistan (It's only overseas military base) with the closure completed in 2022 but coming to light in 2025. Developed by India since 2002 with an investment of around $80 million, the Soviet-era Ayni base featured a 3,200-meter runway, hangars, fuel storage, and air traffic control facilities built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Located just 20 km from Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor, the base offered strategic access near Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and China’s Xinjiang region. Its withdrawal marks the end of India’s permanent overseas military presence, reflecting a recalibration of its Central Asian strategic posture amid evolving geopolitical realities.
