India stands at 82 in ‘Global bribery risk’ rankings, dips by five spots

  • In a global list that measures business bribery risks, India has dropped to 82nd place in 2021, down five places from 77th last year.
  • According to this year's data, North Korea, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Eritrea have the highest risk of commercial bribery, while Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand have the lowest risk.
  • According to the data, India ranked 77th in 2020 with a score of 45, while it ranked 82nd this year with a score of 44.
  • The TRACE Bribery Risk Matrix assesses the likelihood of bribe demands in 194 jurisdictions.
  • It was first published in 2014 to address a need in the business community for more reliable and nuanced information about the risks of commercial bribery around the world.
  • The ranking of countries is based on four factors - business interactions with the government, anti-bribery deterrence and enforcement, government and civil service transparency, and capacity for civil society oversight which includes the role of the media.
