India has fallen 13 places to rank 23 in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2026, its sharpest decline yet. The drop, from last year’s 10th position, is attributed to the absence of a coal phase-out deadline and continued auction of new coal blocks. Published by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network, the index places India in the ‘medium performer’ category, despite progress in renewables, energy efficiency and climate strategies aligned with 2030 NDC targets.
