India's First 'Night Sky Sanctuary' to be set up in Ladakh

  • The government will set up India’s first-ever ‘night sky sanctuary’ in Ladakh region- work on which will be completed within three months.
  • The proposed 'Night Sky Sanctuary will be located at Hanle village in Ladakh as a part of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and will be one of the world’s highest-located sites for optical, infra-red, and gamma-ray telescopes.
  • Ladakh is a region administered by India as a union territory, which constitutes a part of the larger Kashmir region and has been the subject of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947.
  • The region is most famous for breathtaking landscapes, the crystal-clear skies, the highest mountain passes, thrilling adventure activities, Buddhist Monasteries and festivals.
