India Emerges as a Leading Destination for Foreign Citizens Seeking Organ Transplant Treatment

  • Organ transplant treatments for foreign citizens in India are regulated under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994. Treatment is permitted only on a Medical Visa, and all living organ donors must be at least 18 years old. Prior approval from the Authorization Committee is required when the donor or recipient is a foreign national.
  • Commercial dealing in human organs is strictly prohibited in India and is considered a punishable offense under THOTA, 1994. This regulation ensures ethical practices in organ transplantation.
