Government appoints Poonam Gupta as the next RBI Deputy Governor

  • The government appointed Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on April 1, 2025. 
  • Dr. Gupta will take over from Michael Debprata Patra, who retired from the position about two months ago. 
  • She is currently serving as the Director General of the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER). 
  • She is also a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and the Convener of the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission.
  • The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Gupta's appointment as Deputy Governor of the RBI for a period of three years from the date he assumes office.
