The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized Fiji for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem, making it the 26th country globally to achieve this milestone. Trachoma, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is a leading infectious cause of blindness, spreading through contact with infected secretions and contaminated surfaces. Fiji’s success is attributed to sustained government, community, and international efforts, including comprehensive surveys, improved water and sanitation initiatives, and awareness programs. This achievement highlights Fiji’s leadership in health and its commitment to combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
