Demwe Lower Hydel Project Gets Environmental Clearance Extension Till 2037 Amid Controversy

  • The 1,750 MW Demwe Lower hydel project in Arunachal Pradesh has received an 11-year extension of its environmental clearance till 2037, 16 years after the original nod in 2010. The Ministry of Environment’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) cited prolonged litigation as the reason for the delay.
  • The project, spanning Anjaw and Lohit districts, involves a 162 m dam and affects over 1,400 hectares of forest, including habitats of the critically endangered White-Bellied Heron. Critics have raised concerns as a 2017 NGT ruling had earlier set aside its wildlife clearance, questioning biodiversity risks and compliance. Developers argue litigation caused over 10 years of delay, but environmentalists call for fresh ecological studies given long-term changes.
