Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has secured a controversial eighth term, winning 53.7% of the vote in an election marred by violence and allegations of fraud. Opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who claimed victory, received 35.2%, leading to mass protests and deadly clashes across cities like Douala and Garoua. Despite unrest and accusations that the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) “stole the election,” Biya thanked voters and called for unity. Having ruled since 1982, Biya faces growing criticism over corruption, unemployment, and a separatist insurgency, as analysts warn of possible political instability in the nation.
