The 56th GST Council meeting, held in the national capital New Delhi and chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, approved a landmark reform in India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. This is regarded as the most comprehensive restructuring since the GST was implemented in 2017. The Council introduced a simplified two-tier GST structure with 5% for essential items and 18% for non-essential goods and services, aimed at easing compliance and reducing consumer costs. In addition, a special 40% slab has been created for “sin goods” such as tobacco, pan masala, gutkha, sugary drinks, and luxury cars, ensuring higher taxation on items considered harmful or extravagant.
