Researchers in Siberia are testing a juvenile mammoth, whose remains have been found well preserved in thaw permafrost after more than 50,000 years.
The creature, whose trunk is like a small elephant, has been recovered from the Batagaika Crater, a massive crater more than 80 meters (260 feet) deep, which is likely to continue to grow as a result of climate change.
The carcass, weighing more than 110 kilograms (240 pounds), was brought to the surface on an improvised stretcher, said Maxim Cherpasov, head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum laboratory in the city of Yakutsk.
