  • The Yaoshang festival has begun on Tuesday and will continue for five days in Manipur. 
  • The festival is celebrated by the Meetei who are predominantly Hindu and it is celebrated at the same time as Holi. 
  • However, during the Yaoshang festival, apart from playing with colour, the festival also witnessed a number of cultural and religious activities for five days.
  • The festival is celebrated every year on the full moon of Lamta (February-March) of the Meitei lunar calendar. Yaoshang begins just after sunset followed by Yaosang Mei thaba, also known as Burning of the Straw Hut. Children visit neighbours to ask for monetary donations, called nakatheng.
