World Tsunami Awareness Day is celebrated every year on 5 November.
This day is celebrated to increase awareness about tsunami and preparedness for disasters.
In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day.
The proposal to celebrate this day was presented by Japan in the United Nations General Assembly.

The eighth World Tsunami Awareness Day is being celebrated in the year 2023.
A tsunami is a series of huge waves generated by movements under the oceans that are usually associated with earthquakes that occur under or near the seabed.
For a tsunami to occur, the intensity of an earthquake must be at least 6.5 on the Richter scale.
The World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023 theme is 'Raising awareness of the underlying disaster risk drivers – poverty, inequality and other drivers of vulnerability'.
