World Theatre Day is observed on 27 March 2026 with the theme ‘Theatre and a Culture of Peace’. Initiated by the International Theatre Institute in 1961 and first celebrated in 1962, the day honours the art of theatre and its role in society. This year’s international message is delivered by acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe.
The theme highlights theatre’s power in fostering dialogue, emotional connection, and understanding across divided communities. Celebrations across over 90 countries include performances, workshops, festivals, and educational events. In India, theatre continues to nurture talent, with many Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, and Paresh Rawal beginning their careers on stage, underlining its enduring influence on cinema and cultural expression.
