World Thalassemia Day is observed globally on May 8th each year to raise awareness about thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder characterized by abnormal haemoglobin production.
The day aims to educate people about the importance of early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention methods for thalassemia, as well as to show support for those living with the condition.
Thalassemia Day also serves as a platform to advocate for improved access to healthcare services and research initiatives to combat the disease.
Throughout the day, various events, campaigns, and educational programs are organized by healthcare organizations, patient advocacy groups, and communities worldwide to promote understanding and support for individuals affected by thalassemia.
The theme of the event this year is” Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress: Equitable and Accessible Thalassaemia Treatment for All.”
