  • World Telecommunication Day, observed annually on May 17th, celebrates the role of telecommunication in modern society and the development of information and communication technologies (ICT). 
  • It aims to raise awareness about the importance of communication and bridging the digital divide. This day also marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865.
  • It provides an opportunity to highlight the possibilities that telecommunication and ICT can bring to societies and economies worldwide.
  • The theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) in 2024 is “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development.”
