International Day of the Indigenous People is observed every year on 9 August.
This day is celebrated worldwide to spread awareness about indigenous populations and protect their rights.
Indigenous populations around the world live in close contact with nature. The places they live in are home to about 80% of the world's biodiversity.
The day also recognizes the contribution made by them to protect the world's environment.
The theme of the 2024 International Day of Indigenous Peoples: 'Protecting the Rights of Aboriginal Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Early Contact'.
