World Pneumonia Day is celebrated every year on 12 November.
It is a global event celebrated to spread awareness and educate people to combat pneumonia disease.
Pneumonia is an inflammatory respiratory disorder caused by bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
This damages the air sacs of the lungs, called 'alveoli'.
This results in accumulation of fluid or pus in the air sacs, making breathing difficult.
It is an infectious disease and can be fatal for people with weak immunity, especially children and the elderly.
The theme of World Pneumonia Day for the year 2023 has been 'Every Breath Counts: Stopping Pneumonia in Its Tracks'.
World Pneumonia Day was first observed on 12 November 2009.
