  • It is a global event celebrated to spread awareness and educate people to combat pneumonia disease.
  • Pneumonia is an inflammatory respiratory disorder caused by bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
  • This damages the air sacs of the lungs, called 'alveoli'.
  • This results in accumulation of fluid or pus in the air sacs, making breathing difficult.
  • It is an infectious disease and can be fatal for people with weak immunity, especially children and the elderly.
  • The theme of World Pneumonia Day for the year 2023 has been 'Every Breath Counts: Stopping Pneumonia in Its Tracks'.
  • World Pneumonia Day was first observed on 12 November 2009.
