World Obesity Day 2026 was observed on March 4, drawing global attention to the rising obesity crisis with the theme "8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity," emphasising collective responsibility of governments, communities and individuals worldwide.
Established by the World Obesity Federation in 2015 and shifted to March 4 in 2020, the day highlights that obesity is a complex chronic disease shaped by genetics, urban design, food systems, socioeconomic conditions and healthcare access rather than individual choice alone.
Obesity significantly raises risks of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and certain cancers, with treatment ranging from lifestyle modifications and behavioural counselling to prescription medications and bariatric surgical procedures such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.
Prevention remains the most effective strategy, with experts recommending nutrient-rich diets, at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, quality sleep and stress management, alongside community-level advocacy for healthier food systems and urban planning.
