World Cotton Day, observed on October 7, celebrates cotton’s economic, social, and environmental contributions, especially for developing and least-developed countries. Cotton supports millions of rural families, boosts export earnings, and underpins industries like cottonseed oil and livestock feed. Recognized by the UN in 2021 following a proposal by the Cotton‑4 nations (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, later joined by Côte d’Ivoire), the day promotes sustainable farming, value addition, market access, and inclusive trade. It also contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals such as poverty reduction, decent work, responsible production, and climate action.
