World Anaesthesia Day is celebrated annually on October 16 to mark the first successful public demonstration of ether anaesthesia in 1846 by American dentist William T. G. Morton at Massachusetts General Hospital. This breakthrough enabled surgeon John Collins Warren to perform the first painless surgery, revolutionizing modern medicine. The day honors anaesthesiologists’ vital role in surgeries, critical care, and health emergencies. The 2025 theme, "Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies," highlights their importance during disasters, pandemics, and mass casualty events, emphasizing awareness, preparedness, and equitable access to safe anaesthesia worldwide.
