The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has conducted a snow leopard census for the first time.
A total of 718 snow leopards have been found in the country, with Ladakh having the highest population.
This information was released by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav at the meeting of the National Board for Wildlife.
The Snow Leopard Population Estimation (SPAI) in India is the country's first scientific survey.
Support was received from many institutions for the survey.
It is proposed to conduct periodic population estimation of snow leopard population every four years in the States and Union Territories.
This will help in conservation and development of snow leopards.
The report also highlights the need for dedicated snow leopard cells, which will help increase the population of the endangered snow leopard.
