  • The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has conducted a snow leopard census for the first time.
  • A total of 718 snow leopards have been found in the country, with Ladakh having the highest population.
  • This information was released by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav at the meeting of the National Board for Wildlife.
  • The Snow Leopard Population Estimation (SPAI) in India is the country's first scientific survey.
  • Support was received from many institutions for the survey.
  • It is proposed to conduct periodic population estimation of snow leopard population every four years in the States and Union Territories.
  • This will help in conservation and development of snow leopards.
  • The report also highlights the need for dedicated snow leopard cells, which will help increase the population of the endangered snow leopard.
