  • K P Unnikrishnan, former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader, passed away in Kozhikode, Kerala, after treatment for age-related ailments, leaving behind a distinguished legacy spanning journalism, activism and six decades of parliamentary politics.
  • Unnikrishnan represented Vadakara for six consecutive Lok Sabha terms from 1971 to 1991, serving on the Public Accounts Committee and leading Congress (Secular) in Parliament between 1981 and 1984.
  • As Union Minister for Surface Transport and Communications under PM V P Singh, he oversaw India's massive civilian evacuation during the 1990 Gulf War crisis, one of the largest such operations in India's history.
  • Born on September 20, 1936, and educated at Madras Christian College, he began as a journalist before entering politics through the Socialist Party, later joining Congress and becoming a close associate of both V K Krishna Menon and Indira Gandhi.
