  • Shyam Benegal, the pioneer filmmaker of the Indian parallel cinema movement, passed away in Mumbai on 23 December 2024 at the age of 90.
  • He received many prestigious awards like 18 National Film Awards, Nandi Award, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
  • The veteran director spearheaded the Indian parallel cinema movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of his notable films, including Ankur, Nishant, and Manthan, are considered classics in Hindi cinema.
  • Bhumika, Junoon, Mandi, Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, Mammo and Sardari Begum are some of her other critically acclaimed films.
  • He was the only film director to win the National Film Award five times for Best Hindi Feature Film.
