Shyam Benegal, the pioneer filmmaker of the Indian parallel cinema movement, passed away in Mumbai on 23 December 2024 at the age of 90.
He received many prestigious awards like 18 National Film Awards, Nandi Award, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
The veteran director spearheaded the Indian parallel cinema movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of his notable films, including Ankur, Nishant, and Manthan, are considered classics in Hindi cinema.
Bhumika, Junoon, Mandi, Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda, Mammo and Sardari Begum are some of her other critically acclaimed films.
He was the only film director to win the National Film Award five times for Best Hindi Feature Film.
