India's first urban ropeway in Varanasi, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24, 2022, is set to be ready by August 2024, with phase 1 projected to be completed by 2025 at a cost of Rs 645 crore.
The 3.7-kilometer ropeway will connect five significant locations in Varanasi: Girja Ghar Godowlia Chowk, Rath Yatra, Kashi Vidyapith (Bharatmala Mandir), Varanasi Railway Station, and Varanasi Cantonment.
This ropeway project will reduce travel time significantly, cutting the journey from Varanasi Junction to Godowlia to just 16 minutes while providing an aerial view of the city, enhancing both transportation efficiency and tourist experience.
