  • Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Department (USDMA) to conduct a vulnerability study of 13 glacial lakes, five of which are in high-risk zones, to prevent glacial lake outburst floods during the monsoon.
  • The high-risk lakes are located in Darma, Lasaryanghati, and Kutiyangti valleys in Pithoragarh district, and Vasudhara Tal Lake in Dhauli Ganga basin in Chamoli district, all situated at elevations above 4,000 meters.
  • Himalayan glaciers are in danger due to climate change, necessitating continuous monitoring and satellite identification of new glacial lakes to mitigate potential hazards.
