  • Australia formally launched a hotly-competitive program to equip its navy with nuclear-powered submarines in a new defense alliance with Britain and the United States.
  • It is the first public signing of a technology deal since the three countries declared the formation of AUKUS, a defense alliance, in September to address escalating geopolitical tensions in the Pacific.
  • Under the AUKUS agreement, Australia would receive eight cutting-edge nuclear-powered submarines capable of long-range stealth missions.
  • It also allows submarines to share cyber, AI, quantum, and unspecified underwater capabilities.
