Daily Current Affairs / Uruguay Legalizes Euthanasia, First in Latin America
Category : International Published on: October 18 2025
Uruguay has become the first Latin American country to legalize euthanasia by passing the Dignified Death bill in the Senate, with 20 of 31 legislators voting in favor. The law permits mentally sound adults with terminal, irreversible illnesses to request assisted suicide, which must be performed by a healthcare professional in a painless and respectful manner. The move reflects Uruguay’s socially liberal track record, including marijuana legalization, same-sex marriage, and abortion. Public support for the law is around 62%, though opposition comes mainly from the Catholic Church. Uruguay joins Colombia and Ecuador, which decriminalized euthanasia through court rulings rather than legislation.
