The Union Cabinet has approved the “Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses”, a six-year, ₹11,440 crore initiative aimed at boosting India’s domestic pulse production and achieving self-sufficiency by 2030-31. Implemented from 2025-26 to 2030-31, the mission seeks to bridge the country’s persistent demand-supply gap, reduce import dependence, improve farmer incomes, and promote sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. Key features include ambitious production targets expanding pulse cultivation to 310 lakh hectares and raising production to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31, along with multi-location trials for high-yielding, pest-resistant varieties, widespread seed distribution, and assured procurement under the Price Support Scheme for Tur, Urad, and Masoor. The mission also emphasizes skill-building for farmers, development of 1,000 post-harvest processing units, and improved market access.
