  • In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on July 28, 2022, adopted a resolution recognising the right to a healthy environment for all.
  • With 161 votes in favour, and eight abstentions, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring access to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, a universal human right.
  • The resolution adopted was five decades in the making. From a foothold in the 1972 Stockholm Declaration, the right has been integrated into constitutions, national laws, and regional agreements.
  • The 1972 United Nations Conference on the environment in Stockholm was the first world conference to make the environment a major issue.
