In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on July 28, 2022, adopted a resolution recognising the right to a healthy environment for all.
With 161 votes in favour, and eight abstentions, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring access to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, a universal human right.
The resolution adopted was five decades in the making. From a foothold in the 1972 Stockholm Declaration, the right has been integrated into constitutions, national laws, and regional agreements.
The 1972 United Nations Conference on the environment in Stockholm was the first world conference to make the environment a major issue.
