  • Typhoon Lan made landfall in Japan, August 15, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
  • Lan is the seventh tropical storm of the season and is prevailing over the Pacific Ocean near central Japan.
  • The typhoon made landfall near Shionomisaki in Wakayama prefecture, about 400 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. It had maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour), equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane.
  • Typhoon Lan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Paolo, was the third-most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017.
