On 22 May 2024, General Tu Lam was elected the new President of Vietnam by the Vietnamese Parliament. Previously he was Vietnam's Minister of Public Security and was removed as a minister by the Vietnamese parliament for the presidency.
Tu Lam is a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and has been elected to a term until 2026.
General To Lam led the anti-corruption campaign "blazing furnace" in the country from 2016 as Minister of Public Security.
The campaign attempted to root out widespread corruption in Vietnam, resulting in the recent resignation of three of the country's top five leaders.
