The United States has appointed former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as the U.S. ambassador to NATO, a cornerstone of the Western alliance.
Whitaker served as Acting Attorney General from November 2018 until February 2019, when the Russian election interference investigation into Robert Mueller was winding down.
Whitaker was Jeff Sessions' chief of staff in the Trump administration and became acting attorney general after Sessions' dismissal.
